About Us

Jack Backus Architects is an architectural practice based in Oakland, California. Since its founding in 2006, Jack Backus Architects approaches projects both pragmatically and meticulously.

We believe in maintaining the special qualities of context-specific designs while revitalizing and optimizing the organization and quality of spaces. Committed to the preservation of the intangible qualities of historical designs and community continuity, we are devoted to excellent design through craft, material, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Jack Backus Architects primarily focuses on residential remodel projects, varying in scale and scope.

Our Team

Jack Backus, AIA

Principal

Jack Backus received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Washington in 1992 and a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas - Austin in 1997. He was licensed to practice architecture by the State of California in 2006. Jack has worked at several firms including Kirk E. Peterson and Associates Architects in Oakland; HLW International LLP, NBBJ Architecture Design and Planning, and Korth Sunseri Hagey Architects in San Francisco; and Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Genoa, Italy. Jack has lived in California for over 20 years and now lives in Oakland with his wife Leslie.

Amornrit Pukdeedamrongrit

Associate

Amornrit graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1994. He has worked at several firms including SOM, Rafael Viñoly, and Menz and Cook Architects in New York; as well as Korth Sunseri Hagey Architects in San Francisco. Amornrit has been in the Bay Area since, and currently lives in Kensington with his wife, daughter, dog, and cat.

Sally Yu

Associate

Sally joined Jack Backus Architects in the Fall of 2017. She earned her BFA in Interior Architecture & Design from the Academy of Art University and later completed her Master of Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. In her free time, Sally enjoys spending time outdoors, whether hiking or camping during the summer, and values quality time with her family.

Debbie Chernoff

Project Manager

Debbie graduated from the University of Maryland and has a long-standing career in advertising, including more than 20 years with The Washington Post. For the past eight years, she has worked with Jack Backus Architects, where she serves as a project manager and supports the team across a variety of initiatives. Outside of work, she enjoys knitting and staying active through regular workouts.
